Support package puts hard
RTOS on top VME SBC
LynuxWorks is to offer a board support package (BSP) for the Motorola MVME5500 series, the company's highest performance VMEbus single board computer
The MVME5500 is designed with the powerful 1GHz MPC7455 PowerPC processor for data-intensive applications in medical imaging, defence and aerospace and industrial automation. LynuxWorks' LynxOS real-time operating system (RTOS) BSP will offer mutual customers a solid software environment to go along with industry leading Motorola VME hardware.

Motorola's MVME5500 series provides unparalleled processing power and I/O flexibility for applications including motion control, medical imaging, simulators, command and control, radar, guidance systems and sonar.
The MVME5500 is backward compatible, allowing embedded customers to take advantage of the advanced features of the MVME5500 series and protect their existing investment in VMEbus infrastructure.
The LynxOS BSP will provide embedded developers a full Posix conformant and Linux ABI (application binary interface) compatible RTOS to ensure software interoperability and enable developers to leverage both open source and proprietary applications.
As the IEEE certifies LynxOS Posix conformant, LynxOS assures code portability and software interoperability to provide developers an alternative to other operating systems that only implement portions of Posix.
This provides a significant advantage as many industries, specifically the defence and aerospace market, are specifying conformance to the Posix specification to support interoperability among various applications.

LynxOS also provides a Linux ABI compatibility layer so Linux applications can run unchanged in a hard real-time environment.
This is crucial to allowing developers to leverage the innumerable open source and proprietary applications available on the market and migrate from Linux to the hard real-time capabilities of LynxOS as their design needs evolve.
In addition, the LynxOS BSP will include advanced embedded tools such as VisualLynux and Spyker to decrease production costs and speed time to market.
VisualLynux is an extension of Microsoft Visual Studio IDE that enables developers to build applications in a Windows host environment to accelerate development and improve product performance and quality.
LynuxWorks' Spyker is the first dynamic instrumented system trace analyser that allows developers to accurately perform event tracing to not only gather, display and interact with data concerning their applications, but also accelerate development and debugging with easy, anytime visibility into their product design process.
With these comprehensive tools developers can enhance product quality and reliability and rapidly deploy products to market at a significantly lower cost.
"LynxOS coupled with our MVME5500 provides a complete solution for customers needing an operating system with hard real-time, deterministic performance for their design projects", said Jerry Gipper, Director of Marketing, Motorola Computer Group.
"Additionally, LynuxWorks' 15 years of expertise in the embedded software industry will offer our customers a high level of support and consulting".
"We are excited to once again extend our relationship with Motorola and provide support for its industry leading VMEbus product line", said Bob Morris, Vice President Sales and Marketing for LynuxWorks.
"With LynxOS, MVME5500 customers will get a true hard real-time operating system to meet the most stringent requirements for mission-critical applications.
Our unique strategy of providing a Linux ABI compatible and Posix conformant RTOS will enable embedded customers to confidently build products leveraging open source-based development".
The LynxOS BSP for the MVME5500 series is expected to be available in November 2003.
