Transmeta has joined the LynuxWorks SynergyWorks alliance programme, providing both LynxOS RTOS and BlueCat Linux support for its new energy-efficient Crusoe SE special embedded processor

The new processor is aimed at a wide range of x86 embedded applications, including industrial automation, scientific instrumentation, point-of-sale terminals, automotive infotainment, process control and home automation systems. LynxOS is uniquely positioned to serve the operating system needs for these markets, with the performance and reliability necessary for mission-critical and real-time embedded applications.

In the high-performance RTOS world, LynxOS offers its users the Linux processing model, Posix conformance and open, standard application programming interfaces (APIs), and support for sophisticated hardware features of the processors, namely full MMU support.

BlueCat Linux completes the offering with an open source alternative for OEMs, whose applications require soft real time performance and benefit from the wealth of advantages that Embedded Linux has to offer.

"Transmeta's Crusoe SE processor and the range of operating system choices available through LynuxWorks will help OEMs deliver the most advanced product features, and with open standards and compatibility available through the software and hardware, manage product life cycles more effectively", said Arthur L Swift, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Transmeta Corp.

"That's very important in markets where product revisions occur very quickly and new technology is constantly available".

"We are excited to add the Transmeta Crusoe SE to the ever expanding list of platforms supported by our embedded operating systems", said Bob Morris, Vice President, Sales and Marketing for LynuxWorks.

"The availability of both LynxOS and BlueCat support for the Transmeta Crusoe SE represents a very powerful solution set for a broad range of demanding embedded applications.

The Crusoe family of products delivers a unique high-performance, energy-efficient and passively cooled hardware solution for our customers, with complete x86 compatibility.

By utilising LynxOS' ABI compatibility with Linux, OEMs can now develop a range of real time performance products across their product line, without the burden of maintaining different versions of their applications.

Their Linux applications can run unchanged on either BlueCat or LynxOS, while hosted on the low power, yet high performance Crusoe SE platform".

Complete LynxOS 4.0 and BlueCat 4.0 support for the Transmeta Crusoe SE is now available for purchase from LynuxWorks.
