Custom charger powers
rugged handheld computer

A custom-designed Li-ion charger/adapter unit has been developed by Lawtronics

The battery management specialist was asked by MBM Technology to design and manufacture a power source for its rugged new Termite handheld computer. The DC-powered L-I5040AR unit can power the computer directly and/or charge its lithium-ion battery pack. As the main power input for the computer, it guarantees a regulated 12V 2A supply.

In charger mode, it can perform a managed rapid charge of the 5.5Ah Li-ion battery pack.

Because the handheld is designed to operate in harsh, arduous field conditions, it needs to be able to operate from all-terrain vehicle voltages of up to 30V.

'We won the contract to develop the unit because of our long-standing expertise in Li-ion charger technology', explained Lawtronics' technical manager, David Winnett.

'Our ability to design nonstandard equipment and quickly bring it to market was also a contributing factor'.

Housed in a Lawtronics-manufactured extruded heatsink enclosure, the L-I5040AR includes panel-mounted LEDs to indicate charge state, battery fault and open circuit conditions.

An additional safety feature of the charger is its timer shutdown circuit, which prevents overcharging in the unlikely event of a failure of the management system.
