Group to define
external storage standards
A working group has been formed to define a common standard for entry-level external data storage systems
LSI Logic has joined with Dell, Intel and others to form a working group to define a common standard for entry-level external data storage systems. LSI will hold a seat on the Board of Directors of the Storage Bridge Bay (SBB) working group. Magnum Semiconductor is to acquire the LSI consumer products business, leaving LSI to focus its investments on its storage, networking and mobility market segments
LSI also plays a leadership role on the T10, T11 and T13 technical committees.
'A supplier of choice, LSI is at the forefront of innovation and standards definition designing products that anticipate changes in the marketplace while maintaining cost efficiencies', said Brent Ross, Director of Product Management, Engenio Storage Group, LSI Logic.
'In addition, during the product development process we are able to ensure that new solutions are subject to robust product and interoperability testing to provide investment protection for our partners and their customers'.
Initially, the SBB working group will focus on developing and distributing specifications for standardising external disk subsystem technologies.
The specifications will define a mechanical/electrical interface between a passive backplane drive array and the electronics packages that give the array its personality.
It is expected that the first release of the specification will be completed by mid-2006.
Customers can expect products in compliance with the specification to be in the market thereafter.
By defining common standards, the SBB working group is shaping the industry to enable lower customer costs, provide faster access to new products and technologies, and lead to improved product quality and compatibility.
