LSI Logic has expanded its SoC CoreWare portfolio with the addition of the standard MIPS64 5Kf microprocessor core for customer SoC designs

The MIPS64 5Kf processor core uses LSI Logic's high performance Gflx 0.11-micron (drawn) process, operating at clock speeds of up to 333MHz, and extends LSI Logic's CoreWare offering to address an even wider range of computation-intensive communications, storage and consumer applications. Additionally, the MIPS32 4KEc 32bit processor core is also available for up to 200MHz designs in LSI Logic's Gflx process technology.

LSI Logic has engaged with several key customers to incorporate these new cores into leading edge SoC designs.

"We're extremely pleased.

We have customer designs already underway with these standard cores from MIPS", said Rafi Kedem, senior director of the Processor Cores Technology Group at LSI Logic.

"The dual issue (integer and floating-point) capabilities of the 5Kf are extremely beneficial for many of the applications we are targeting with this processor.

Also, the 333MHz frequency matches well with the speed of DDR memories to maximise system performance in applications with extensive memory traffic".

As part of its CoreWare IP portfolio, LSI Logic also offers a full range of processors licensed from ARM, a ZSP family of DSP cores, a full range of peripherals, reference designs, platforms, and 'rapid prototyping' support to enable right-first-time on-time customer SoCs.

LSI Logic has standardised on the amba 2.0 on-chip interconnect as its SoC connectivity for all processor related intellectual property (IP) functions.

LSI Logic's implementations of the MIPS64 5Kf and MIPS32 4KEc are available complete with AMBA AHB interfaces to leverage the extensive offering of AMBA IP available from LSI Logic and other sources.

"Since 1987, LSI Logic has had a long history of bringing innovative MIPS-based products to market, such as the 64bit processors found within the renowned Sony PlayStation game consoles", said Gary Montgomery, director of product marketing at MIPS Technologies.

"Now, LSI Logic is continuing its track record of innovation on the MIPS architecture by offering the latest in our low-power, high-performance processor cores in its expanding ASIC portfolio".

The 5Kf core is the most fully featured member of the MIPS64 5K family and is the industry's only licensable synthesisable 64bit core with an integrated floating-point unit.

The MIPS64 5Kf core is ideal for applications demanding high-performance processing such as, networking, imaging and printing, and next generation digital consumer products.

The MIPS32 4KEc processor core offers high performance, low power consumption and highly configurable features making it ideal for a variety of embedded applications from wireless mobile devices to emerging home networking products.

The MIPS32 4KE family is the first MIPS core family to implement MIPS16e code compression that can reduce overall memory requirements by up to 40%, providing significant cost savings.
