LSI provides approved modem performance
LSI Logic has announced two significant successes with Correlant Communications (formerly known as TurboNet), the top OEM supplier of DOCSIS cable modems
LSI Logic and Correlant codeveloped silicon and system-level products, including a single-chip DOCSIS cable modem, the MultiLynx CL2161. As a result of this alliance, multiple cable modem models featuring LSI Logic's MultiLynx CL2161 recently received DOCSIS 1.0 certification from Cable Laboratories (CableLabs).

Magnum Semiconductor is to acquire the LSI consumer products business, leaving LSI to focus its investments on its storage, networking and mobility market segments
In addition, LSI Logic has become the primary silicon provider for Correlant's new cost-effective cable modem solution.
This advances LSI Logic's position in the DOCSIS cable modem market, which topped 10 million units shipped in August 2001 according to broadband research firm Kinetic Strategies.
"We are very pleased with the certification and the results of our relationship with the leading OEM supplier of cable modems worldwide", said Chris Adams, vice president of broadband gateway products for LSI Logic's Broadband Entertainment Division.

"The combination of LSI Logic's technology with Correlant's established expertise in cable modems opens new and exciting markets for us in the exploding residential broadband communications arena".
DOCSIS certification provides cable operators or broadband service providers assurance of interoperability between all head-end cable modem equipment (CMTS) and customer premise cable modems.
To receive DOCSIS certification, modem products using the MultiLynx 2161 chip had to pass tests completed by CableLabs in the areas of interoperability, stability, and specification conformance.
The MultiLynx 2161 is software upgradeable to DOCSIS 1.1.
"Partnering with LSI Logic's team gave us a unique opportunity to leverage our mutual silicon and systems-level expertise", said Harold Tuan, president and CEO of Correlant Communications.
"We have enjoyed a very close working relationship and look forward to having this partnership help us continue to grow our market leading position".
The partnership has also resulted in the development of a two-way interactive digital set-top box product that enables service providers to deploy advanced interactive broadband services over multiple network standards.
Like the MultiLynx 2161, the MultiLynx 2151 has a software-configurable media access controller (MAC) for support of multiple worldwide cable standards, including DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1, Euro-DOCSIS, DVB/DAVIC, Starvue, Digicipher and OpenCable.
This flexibility enables set-top box manufacturers to build and deploy uniform, cost-effective solutions.
The MultiLynx family of products, when combined with LSI Logic's Hi-IQ RF tuner (DPS7000), media processors and controllers (AViA 9600 or SC2005), and the company's advanced ZSP processors for VoIP applications, offers manufacturers complete cable solutions from cost-effective modems to full voice/data/video gateways.
