Design competition to
enhance sub-aqua safety
The DiveTrack competition has been set up in memory of Penny Glover, a diver and satellite communications engineer who died in a tragic diving accident
The IET and the British Sub Aqua Club are challenging engineers to design and create a tracking device for divers who get into difficulties at sea. The DiveTrack competition has been set up in memory of Penny Glover, who was a member of both organisations, and died in a tragic diving accident.

Her body was only discovered after seven weeks.
She was a diver and a satellite communications engineer.
The aim of the global competition is to develop and manufacture a simple and inexpensive device that will ensure divers can be easily found.
The device should be able to be worn by the diver and used to communicate from depths of up to 200 metres, with a range of 400 metres.
The equipment should allow the diver to send an enhanced signal to show a problem has occurred, which should last a minimum of 48 hours to help search and rescue operations.

Glover's sister, Fiona Denny, launched the competition because her family wanted to help prevent families of missing divers from having to wait so long for news and hopefully prevent a similar tragedy occurring again.
She said: 'Penny was a highly experienced diver and lived for her sport'.
'But she was also very safety conscious and this is one of the reasons that her death came as such a shock to both her family and to the diving community generally'.
She added: 'Her family and friends collected money to help launch the DiveTrack competition because we wanted something to commemorate Penny's passion for both diving and for engineering but also to get people talking about diving safety'.
'If it results in a piece of kit that can then be produced commercially and at a cost that makes it attractive to divers and their families, then we will have achieved our ultimate goal'.
The competition is open to individuals and teams who must register by 1st March 2007 to take part in the competition.
Colin Foote of the IET Young Members' Board, said: 'Penny Glover was a well respected member of the IET and we are happy to support this initiative to encourage engineers to take part in the competition and make advancements in this area of technology'.
'This will be of great value to the diving community and demonstrate to a wide audience the contribution made by science and technology to our enjoyment and safety in leisure activities'.
Clare Peddie, National Diving Officer for BSAC, said: 'The British Sub Aqua Club is delighted and privileged to be involved in the ground breaking DiveTrack competition run in honour of Penny Glover'.
'The competition aims to improve diver safety through the design of a simple diver location system'.
'Penny was one of the worlds most highly qualified and experienced divers'.
'She was a respected National Instructor with BSAC and was responsible for the introduction of rebreather diving into BSAC diver training; she is deeply missed by all who knew her'.
