Professor John McCanny of Queen's University Belfast is to receive the Faraday Medal, the IET's most prestigious honour, in recognition of his world-leading contributions to electrical engineering

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, has announced that Professor John McCanny of Queen's University Belfast is to receive the Faraday Medal, its most prestigious honour, in recognition of his world-leading contributions to electrical engineering. The Faraday medal pays tributes to McCanny's pioneering advancements in the design of silicon integrated circuits for digital signal processing.

With a multi-award-winning career spanning more than 30 years, Prof McCanny has published around 300 major journal and conference papers, holds 25 patents and has published five research books.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the IEEE and the Irish Academy of Engineering.

Professor McCanny also cofounded two successful high technology companies, Audio Processing Technology and Amphion Semiconductor.

In addition, he helped develop the vision that has led to the creation of the new GBP 40 million Institute for Electronics Communications and Information Technology (ECIT), located on the Northern Ireland Science Park.

ECIT now houses over 130 researchers.

Its overall objective is the creation of a world leading research facility that specialises in key and interrelated areas of electronics, communications and computer technology, in particular ones that under-pin important opportunities for industrial application over the next decade.

Prof John McCanny joins a remarkable list of recipients of the Faraday Medal, inaugurated in 1922 to acknowledge those who have played a significant part in shaping the world as we know it.

Previous medallists include Sir Ambrose Fleming who developed a device to enable commercial radio services and more recently Professor CK Kao who developed fibre optics.

Professor McCanny will be the first person to receive the Faraday Medal from the new Institution of Engineering of Technology, which has been formed by the Institution of Electrical Engineers and Institution of Incorporated Engineers.

Prof McCanny said: 'I am delighted to receive this award and proud to be a part of such a distinguished history of former Faraday Medallists'.

'I am also particularly honoured to be the first recipient of this award from the new institution'.

Sir John Chisholm, President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology said: 'The Faraday Medal is the highest accolade that the Institution can offer demonstrating the Institution's ongoing commitment to recognising, rewarding and promoting the achievements of exceptional individuals within engineering and technology all over the globe'.

'Professor McCanny's exemplary career is an example of some of the great dynamic thinkers driving the engineering and technology industry forward'.

The Faraday Medal will be presented to Prof McCanny on 11th October 2006 at the institution's annual Innovation In Engineering Awards at Savoy Place, London.
