IC promises cost effective power and
speed control
A new phase control IC replaces the now obsolete TCA280B that has been used since the 1970s and is compatible with new-generation triacs featuring negative triac gate triggering.
Integrated Electronic Solutions (IES) has released a new phase control IC to replace the now obsolete TCA280B that has been used since the 1970s and other similar devices The OM5428 still incorporates the features of TCA280B, but is designed to be compatible with new-generation triacs featuring negative triac gate triggering

Integrated Electronic Solutions is expanding its range of temperature control integrated circuits for thermostat applications with the introduction of IES5521A.
Buffer chip extends two-wire buses
Bus buffer IC is suitable for extending and expanding I2C, SMBus, PMBus, IPMB and other similar two-wire bus systems.
This allows it to drive current-sensitive three-quadrant triacs reliably, making it suitable for both industrial and domestic appliances.
Other key features include low supply current that translates into low power dissipation, allowing the use of low wattage power resistors.
The OM5428 is connected to the mains via a dropping resistor, removing the need of additional supply circuitry.
Like other integrated circuits designed by IES, the OM5428 is designed to minimise RF interference and transients on the mains supply with zero-crossing switching of load current.
The OM5428 is well suited for variety of designs such as phase control where it uses gate sensing to provide a single gate pulse.
The OM5428 can also be configured as a soft start motor controller to eliminate the effect of high starting torque.
Other designs include synchronous on/off switching and time proportional (temperature) control.
The main areas of application for the OM5428 include various domestic appliances (light dimmers, blender, hand mixers, vacuum cleaner etc) and industrial tasks in universal motor control.
In general, the the OM5428 features flexibility and simplicity for noncomplex applications, providing engineers with a cost effective power and speed control solution.
The OM5428 is available in DIP-16 packaging.
Engineering samples (SO-16 packaging) and demonstration kit of the OM5428 are available now.
