Surface mount resistors boost power density
A range of 3W-rated surface mount chip resistors come in a package size that is traditionally rated at only 1W.
A new 3W-rated surface mount chip resistor from IRC Advanced Film Division offers power electronics design engineers a high power device for space-constrained applications.
And the LRF3W Series chip resistors come in a package size that is traditionally rated at 1W.
"The surface mount resistors, in a 1225 package, have terminations on the long end of the devices, creating a low inductance part and resulting in less stress on the solder joints," says Gary Bleasdell, Thick Film Business Unit Director for IRC's Advanced Film Division.
"The thermal properties of the chip are also much better than traditional designs, allowing it to be rated to 3W as opposed to 1W.
Because of its high power rating in the space-saving package, the LRF3W Series resistor is ideal for high current-sensing applications including fuel-gauging and overcurrent detection, AC/DC power supplies, motorised seats, power windows, seat heaters and automotive fuel pump collision cutoff.
The LRF3W Series chip resistor features a resistance range from 2 to 100mohm, with absolute tolerances of +/-1, +/-2, +/-5 or +/-10%.
Power dissipation is up to 3W at 70C, with TCR as low as +/-100ppm/C.
Operating temperature ranges from - 55 to +150C.
The chip resistors feature leach-resistant wrap-around terminations with either tin/lead or lead free matte tin over nickel plating.
IRC will also produce devices outside these specifications to meet customer requirements.
Pricing for the LRF3W Series chip resistor is US $0.20 at 1800-piece minimum order.
