A novel pair of micro-sized 3.3V single PWM controllers incorporate their own charge pumps, allowing them to be driven directly from low-cost standard-logic-level MOSFETs
A novel pair of micro-sized 3.3V single PWM controllers incorporate their own charge pumps, allowing them to be driven directly from low-cost standard-logic-level mosfets. This in turn results in smaller designs and reduced costs with improved performance. Both controllers are available in 16-lead 5 x 5mm micro lead frame plastic (MLFP) and 14-lead small outline integrated circuit (SOIC) packages, both offering 54% space savings over conventional packages.

The Endura ISL6526 and ISL6527 from Intersil are all-in-one controllers that include on-chip MOSFET drivers with control logic plus fast 300 or 600kHz switching for smaller filter components.
They also provide a low voltage reference, error amplifier, digital soft-start control, voltage and current protection, as well as the industry's first fully-integrated charge pump all in an highly integrated SOIC or MLFP package The controllers' fully integrated charge pump provides the higher drive voltage required to turn on standard logic level N-channel mosfets allowing the use of less-costly standard logic-level N-channel mosfets.
However, they will also drive low-logic-level N-channel mosfets with a 6% boost in efficiency for a 6A DC/DC convertor.

These new PWM controllers are suitable for power control in end products such as workstations, file servers, set top boxes, gateways, cable modems, DSL modems and point-of-load DC/DC convertor modules.
They are particularly useful in workstation and server memory core and termination power systems, for onboard I/O chipset supplies, power converters for graphics processors, DSP and communications processor supplies and other low-voltage supplies.
Both ICs operate from 3.3 to 5V input voltages with a voltage accuracy of +/-1.5% over the full range of load, line voltage and temperature with internal soft start, overvoltage, overcurrent, undervoltage and enable facilities.
Evaluation boards are available.
An external voltage reference input pin on the ISL6527 enables users to select a different output voltage allowing the device to operate as a DDR memory active termination power controller.
The ISL6527 accurately tracks the memory core voltage and regulates its own output to half of the memory core, while sourcing or sinking the termination bus load.
This is a requirement for the active termination bus in DDR memory systems widely found in computers, switches and routers.
