Intersil thumbs up
to 54Mbit/s wireless standard
Intersil is supporting the next generation IEEE 802.11g standard that increases wireless LAN data rates to 54Mbit/s while maintaining full backwards compatibility with existing 11Mbit/s systems
According to Intersil, the IEEE's 802.11 Committee's decision (by Task Group G) opens the way for a new generation wireless LAN standard offering datarates to 54Mbit/s in the 2.4GHz spectrum - the same frequency spectrum used by existing 802.11b Wi-Fi systems which have a maximum data rate of 11 Mbps.

Intersil plans to introduce new chipsets and reference designs to meet the proposed IEEE 802.11g standard in the first half of 2002.
Mandatory modulation schemes of the proposed standard are Complementary Code Keying (CCK), already used in 802.11b, and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), as used in the forthcoming 802.11a standard.
Two optional modulations are allowed if systems manufacturers choose to add them: CCK-OFDM and CCK-PBCC.

According to Intersil, this new proposal redefines next-generation high-datarate wireless platforms for the industry.
Microsoft and the major PC companies have consistently stated that new high-datarate products must be backwards compatible with current 11Mbit/s Wi-Fi products.
The proposed standard maintains full backwards compatibility while providing the excellent range and low cost of 2.4GHz operations.
"This is a major breakthrough for the wireless industry for several reasons", said Gregory Williams, president and CEO of Intersil Corporation.
"First, it is backwards compatible with the large installed user base of over 110 million Wi-Fi products so it can be used to easily upgrade existing systems.
Secondly, it meets our customers' demands for significantly higher speed for low cost 54Mbit/s to meet the growing demands for multichannel DVD video and CD-quality audio transmission especially in the home".
Intersil will be sampling its new 802.11a 54Mbit/s PRISM Indigo chipset before year end.
Intersil's new chipset will be available by the second quarter of 2002.
The new chipset will implement both the IEEE proposal for mandatory CCK and OFDM modulation schemes to support data rates up to 54Mbit/s.
as well as the optional CCK-OFDM scheme that uses CCK headers and OFDM data payloads Intersil will not develop chip sets for the optional CCK-PBCC modulation.
"We feel that the mandatory elements of the proposed standard meet all the needs of the market", Williams commented.
"Our new chipsets plus reference design and software will offer a complete solution for data rates up to 54Mbit/s for the next generation of products whilst maintaining full backwards compatibility with existing 11Mbit/s products worldwide".
