Intersil aids Microsoft
with wireless Windows
Intersil is supporting Microsoft's plan to integrate the emerging IEEE 802.1x wireless security authentication standard into the next generation Windows XP operating system
Intersil has joined Microsoft and other major wireless LAN leaders to support Microsoft's plan to integrate the emerging IEEE 802.1x wireless security authentication standard into the next generation Windows XP operating system. Intersil will develop PRISM reference chipset designs for Windows XP that are Microsoft WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Labs) certified, helping to enhance Microsoft's initiative to make Wireless LANs a universally available secure, reliable and high-performance networking medium.

Security enhancement in the new IEEE 802.1x standard will enable WLAN users to connect securely and easily to a wired or wireless network.
The 802.1x protocol standard initiates a process that stops data from being forwarded to either a wireless or wired network without a valid authentication key, and periodically requests the user to re-authenticate.
"This initiative is designed to increase the acceptance of the IEEE 802.1x standard for secure WLAN networks in the enterprise, small business and home", said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of PRISM Wireless Products at Intersil.
"Microsoft's support for IEEE 802.11 wireless systems in its Windows XP operating system is a clear indication that 802.11 is rapidly becoming a mainstream networking technology".
The new 802.1x security enhancements will be available on Intersil's PRISM portfolio of 802.11-compliant WLAN chip sets which deliver an 11Mbit/s datarate compliant with the worldwide IEEE 802.11b standard.
They also feature advanced design and process technologies to reduce power consumption, design complexity and total system cost.
