Farnham Racing, the school team sponsored by Infineon Technologies, competed in the 2002-03 Formula Schools Race Day at Silverstone and achieved an impressive 8th place overall in the competition. The 15-strong team, from Farnham Heath End school, were all in attendance on Race Day on 27th June. The team had already banked an outstanding 83% score in the prejudging held in Guildford earlier in June - based on their achievements in design, engineering, marketing and a host of other project skills.

At Silverstone they pitted their radio-controlled, petrol engine car against models from over 100 other schools - with representatives from sponsor Infineon present to cheer them on.

Points gained on the track were added to the prejudging score to win the team 8th place overall.

The team were also awarded certificates for 2nd best use of composites and 3rd best team website.

Team leader and teacher Richard Poynter commented: "Race day itself was a roller coaster of mixed fortunes - the heat of the day contributed to gearbox gremlins which hindered our track performance, but being at Silverstone and competing was a fantastic experience for the team".

Wendy Walker of Infineon added "We are extremely impressed by what the students have achieved and proud of the committed attitude they have demonstrated.

The skills they have developed during the contest will help them in many ways in the future".
