Today's priority-based pre-emptive task schedulers may soon be joined by futuristic deadline schedulers and partition schedulers in RTOSs that offer modularly replaceable task scheduling capabilities.
RTOSs are also taking greater advantage of processor memory management facilities in order to allow application software to separated into protected memory spaces.
Intertask message communication is focusing more and more on 'asynchronous direct message passing', while the use of semaphores and mutexes is tending to decrease.
Message passing is becoming transparent across processor boundaries, to simplify the design of software for distributed and multicore embedded systems.
Kalinsky is Director of Customer Education at Enea Embedded Technology (originator of the OSE RTOS).
He is a popular lecturer and seminar leader on technologies for embedded software in North America and Europe.
In recent years, he has built high-tech training programmes for a number of Silicon Valley companies, on aspects of software engineering for the development of real-time and embedded systems.
Before that, he was involved in the design of many embedded medical and aerospace systems.
Kalinsky holds a PhD in nuclear physics from Yale University, USA.
