A number of top makers of data-enabled cellphones have selected Intel processors based on the Intel XScale technology to power their next generation of communications products

The Intel processor technology provides users of data-enabled communications devices with the ability to do more with their phone and enjoy a rich experience while running a variety of multimedia and Internet applications. Maxon Telecom and Mitac International Corp add to a growing list of key cellular device makers, including Samsung and Hitachi, looking to take advantage of the high-performance, low-power benefits of Intel Xscale technology based processors.

"The growing success of Intel processors in the data handset market segment has been tremendous", said Hans Geyer, Vice President and General Manager of Intel's PCA Components Group.

"The convergence of voice and data in the cellular industry is dramatically changing the way cell phones are built.

Innovators like Maxon and Mitac have quickly recognized the value Intel XScale technology will translate to a compelling experience for their customers".

Maxon, a Korean phone manufacturer with design and engineering teams in Denmark, is the first to announce its plans to deliver an advanced GSM/GPRS handset on the newly introduced Intel PXA800F cellular processor.

The new phone, called the Maxon MX-E20, is a compact entertainment phone with dual display - an inner and outer colour screen.

Other features of the clamshell design include video player, build-in camera, MMS messaging, and games.

The phone will be available in Asia later this year, Europe and the rest of the world early next year.

"Our ability to have built in so many demanding features into a stylish and compact state-of-art design is a considerable achievement", said Hyeon Kim, President and Chief Executive Officer at Maxon.

"Intel's ability to offer a single chip product that provides significant power, performance and space savings was a key factor in our ability to create the innovative MX-E20".

The Mitac Mio 8380 smart phone is another stylish clamshell design running the Intel PXA262 processor, which stacks 32Mbyte of Flash memory and a 200MHz Intel XScale technology processor in a single package.

The Mitac Mio 8380 is the first design with an inbuilt 110Kpixel digital camera with zoom capability in a clamshell device running the Windows-powered Smartphone operating system from Microsoft.

The Mitac phone run on GSM/GPRS cellular networks will be available later this quarter.

"The Mitac 8380 smart phone is a compelling mix of business, personal and entertainment use", said Samuel Wang, Vice President and General Manager of Mitac International Corp's New Visual Media Business Unit.

"The amount of processing and memory performance Intel was able to put in a single package really helped to enable exciting features and capabilities such as downloading and playing video clips, taking pictures, MMS messaging, mobile Internet browsing and playing games".

The Samsung and Hitachi designs, announced earlier this year, run the Intel PXA250 processor and will be available on CDMA cellular networks later this year.
