IBM and Dassault Systemes have developed a specialised product lifecycle management (PLM) industry solution for electronics manufacturers designed to help them better manage the growing complexity of electronic product development. "Collaborative Systems Engineering for Electronics" (CSE-E) is a strategic solution enabling companies to drive their product development process from needs identification to final product qualification and delivery. CSE-E is based on Smarteam, an industry-leading collaborative product data and lifecycle management solution, and DS PLM Practices developed by Dassault Systemes.

The solution optimises the early definition stages of product development when companies establish the requirements, functions and systems architecture of a new product, and generally commit to up to 80% of its cost.

CSE-E also shortens time to market by facilitating design reuse from the earliest stages of the development process, and reduces the costs and risks associated with the launch of a new product.

The CSE-E solution enables electronics manufacturers to streamline their systems engineering processes in light of the growing complexity of electronic product development.

CSE-E integrates the definition of product requirements with system design and validation processes.

This traceability between initial market intent and final product design ensures "right-to-market" products.

CSE-E provides a dedicated environment in which all actors work in concert on a consistent product definition across the product's entire life cycle.

This cross-discipline collaboration facilitates impact analysis and informed decision-making since all groups (design, validation, testing, marketing, supply chain, production) are aware of the impacts that occur due to design change.

"Rapid innovation and collaborative development are critical to success in the electronics industry, particularly in fast-moving consumer segments such as ours", said Riger Font, CEO, Fontini Electrical Appliances, based in Spain.

"By clearly defining product technical and marketing requirements in Smarteam with CSE-E, we are more effectively tracking and managing our product development projects".

"In addition, the implementation tools and intuitive user interface enable rapid deployment of new projects for a very fast ROI".

"The CSE-E solution helps our clients become more competitive by delivering applications and the disciplined processes that enable them to optimise use of resources, streamline product development, and reduce product-related risk", said Kevin Reardon, Vice President and General Manager, Global Electronics Industry, at IBM.

"Through this initiative and others, IBM will continue to develop and deploy solutions for electronics systems engineering in order to drive innovation and market growth for our clients".

"CSE-E widens the reach of Smarteam to include key early stages of systems engineering when a product is defined", said Bruno Latchague, Executive Vice-President PLM R and D Solutions, quality assurance and Support, Dassault Systemes.

"By breaking down requirements, functions, and systems implementation architecture and mapping them to existing corporate intellectual property catalogues, companies can implement a real platform strategy and achieve optimal reuse of company assets".

"This translates into reduced cycle times and improved economies of scale for component sourcing".
