IAR Systems reckons that its integrated development environment, the IAR Embedded Workbench, is the first independent tool to support the new ARM Cortex-M1 processor, the first ARM processor designed specifically for implementation in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). The new version also features support for the M1-enabled Actel Fusion Programmable System Chips (PSCs) and ProASIC3 FPGAs from Actel Corp.

IAR Systems' early release of development tools for the ARM Cortex-M1 processor has been made possible by the close co-operation that has existed between IAR Systems, Actel and ARM during the development phase.
This co-operation has followed on from the successful support by IAR Systems for CoreMP7, Actel's soft ARM7 core.
'IAR Systems has supported ARM architectures with development tools for a long time', commented John Cornish, VP Product Marketing, Processors Division, ARM.

'IAR Systems' endorsement of the new ARM Cortex-M1 processor will provide a boost towards achieving early acceptance among users' IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM with support for the ARM Cortex-M1 processor builds on IAR Systems' previous experience with ARM Thumb and Thumb-2 technology-based development tools to provide excellent performance, combining advanced optimisations with an intelligent workflow, from within a familiar and intuitive user interface.
It provides a fully integrated development environment that includes C/C++ compiler, project manager, editor, build tools and the versatile C-SPY debugger.
Rich Brossart, Vice President, Product Marketing at Actel said: 'Industry-standard cores, like the new ARM Cortex-M1 processor, are supported by comprehensive industry tools and knowledge, enabling designers to leverage proven and familiar tool sets and existing code'.
'For designers looking to implement ARM processor technology in an ARM-enabled, Flash-based Actel FPGA, for example, the comprehensive IAR Embedded Workbench greatly eases the process from compile to debug'.
IAR Systems and Actel are working together to provide a free evaluation version of IAR Embedded Workbench in Actel's ARM-enabled FPGA development kits, and full versions will also be available from IAR Systems.
The new compiler will be released on general sale in Q2 2007, and at the same time, an evaluation version will be made available for download from the IAR Systems website.
