RTOS aids aviation safety certification
Green Hills Software's Integrity-178B RTOS has been selected by Ryan International Corp for avionics product development
Ryan International will use Integrity-178B to help achieve DO-178B certification for all of its industry-leading aviation hazard detection and warning systems, beginning with the MFD multifunction display flight safety system. "Integrity-178B provides an excellent safety-critical RTOS platform, and is the only RTOS that gives us a clear path to DO-178B certification", said Dean Ryan, vice president of engineering with Ryan International Corporation.

"Integrity-178B partitions high level safety applications from those at lower levels, speeding the development and certification process".
Ryan International's flagship product, the TCAD traffic collision and alerting device, is an electronic transponder-based system that alerts pilots to potential collision threats within a traffic area.
The MFD uses data received from the TCAD and other sources to generate a visual display of safety hazards outside the host aircraft, such as planes that are too close, or inclement weather.
The display provides full-colour graphic images similar to those seen by air traffic controllers.
Integrity-178B is an ARINC-653 compliant, hard real-time operating system optimised for safety-and mission-critical applications that require FAA DO-178B certification, the utmost in security, and fast, predictable response.

The Federal Aviation Administration has completed another successful DO-178B certification for the Integrity-178B real-time operating system
Featuring a complete DO-178B Level A certification package that shortens the time required to obtain DO-178B certification, Integrity-178B provides real-time response, memory-protected partitions, and guaranteed resource availability for both CPU time and memory.
Integrity also provides an optional ARINC-653 compliant partition scheduler, making it the only RTOS that can support multiple levels of security (MLS) on a single processor.
Ryan is also using Green Hills Software's Multi integrated development environment (IDE) to develop software that creates the MFD's graphics.
This software, hosted under Integrity-178B, runs on a Motorola MPC8245 processor.
Ryan also plans to use Multi and Integrity-178B to develop and deploy embedded software for future avionics products that use the same MPC8245 platform.
Integrity-178B uses hardware memory protection and an advanced two-level partition scheduler to provide complete time, space, and resource partitioning between applications operating on the same hardware platform.
This partitioning effectively builds a firewall between applications and the kernel, preventing errors in one application from corrupting other applications or the kernel.
Integrity-178B also provides protection and guaranteed resource availability in both the time and space domains, thereby enabling applications that have been assigned different DO-178B safety levels to run concurrently on the same processor (i.e supports "robust partitioning", as defined in ARINC 653).
Integrity-178B's ARINC-653 application/executive (APEX) interface provides a recognised standard interface between the operating system of an avionics computer resource (ACR) and the application software.
Integrity-178B includes an RTOS simulator (ISIM) that enables programmers to develop and test their code on a PC or workstation without the need for target hardware.
Additionally, a real-time EventAnalyzer enables viewing of system and user events in a graphical display.
Integrity-178B is tightly integrated with Green Hills Software's Multi 2000 IDE.
Together with Green Hills Software's family of optimising ada 95, C, and C++ compilers, Multi automates all aspects of embedded software development, including editing, source-level debugging, program building, run-time error checking, version control, and code/performance optimisation.
Multi also features an advanced code coverage tool (GCover) that automates structural coverage analysis for application software, including the analysis of DO-178B.
