Furukawa is to streamline its customer service across Europe with the creation of a new Fitel Interconnectivity Division combining its current Fusion Splicer and MT Connector groups

'This is a good move for everyone and most importantly our customers throughout the European market place', said Interconnectivity Division manager Colin Bonniface. 'Previously both businesses had common customers, distribution channels and industries but now we can all work together and offer from one contact point the world's best range of splicers and optical connectors'.

Furukawa is now the world's second largest manufacturer of optical fibre, following the acquisition of the Optical Fibre Division of Lucent Technologies last year.

It has a pedigree unrivalled in world terms, and was the first company to manufacture optical fibre cable in Japan in 1974.

Late last year, the company launched the world's fastest optical splicer, the S176, - with a splice time of just 11s.

The new division will market the complete range of Furukawa splicers and accessories for applications in both factory and field locations and also high-end multifibre connectors, ferrules, and patch-cord assemblies.

'Furukawa has led the development and implementation of optical fibre technology for nearly 40 years and it is totally committed to maintaining its lead position.

The new division will be at the very heart of this commitment', added Bonniface.
