Fairchild Semiconductor is to expand its Mountaintop 8in facility, dedicated to manufacturing power components

The expansion includes refurbishing a 1400m2 clean room and installing state-of-the-art tooling and support systems to increase Fairchild's production capacity, particularly for its discrete power line. On completion, the plant will be capable of producing 1200 wafers per day. Fairchild will invest $143 million in the expansion, creating 320 new jobs over four years.

The announcement was made last week with the State of Pennsylvania, offering an Opportunity Grant financial package including an initial grant of $1 million over two fiscal years, training funds and an offer of low interest loans through the PA Industrial Development Authority.

Fairchild's Mountaintop facility is one of the few wafer fabrication facilities in the world dedicated to manufacturing 8in discrete power devices.

"Fairchild is the leading global supplier of broad-based power components, with products that minimise, convert, distribute and manage power in leading applications across multiple end markets", said Kirk Pond, Fairchild's President, CEO and Chairman of the Board.

"We continue to invest in developing new and innovative power products that our customers require in high growth markets such as computing and display, industrial, consumer, communications and automotive".

"Our bookings are running at their highest level in more than three years, and we want to ensure Fairchild has the capacity to meet this increased demand for power solutions", Pond continued.

"We're pleased to partner with the State of Pennsylvania to strengthen our 8in facility, while contributing to the economic growth of the Mountaintop community".

"This is truly a win-win situation for Fairchild and for the state".

"Total power component sales now represent 72% of our revenue".

"By increasing our operational efficiency through modernising our factories, increasing our capacity at Mountaintop, and ramping our new Suzhou, China assembly and test facility, we are well poised to meet increased end market demand", Pond concluded.

Some of Fairchild's discrete power products manufactured at Mountaintop include: IGBT products for ignition control and induction heating applications; low voltage trench MOSFETs which provide dense technology in very small packages for applications such as cellphones, PDAs, digital cameras and MP3 players; medium voltage trench mosfets used in the power supplies, power adaptors, power bricks and voltage regulator modules; and the next generation low voltage PowerTrench V technology for the fast growing ultra-portable market.
