The FAN8404D and the FAN8408D are two-phase half-wave motor-drive ICs that provide an optimum high-efficiency solution for cooling-fan motors found in PCs, game consoles and test equipment

Available from Fairchild Semiconductor, the FAN8404D and the FAN8408D are capable of sinking 1.2A motor load current, while requiring just 2.2mA typical supply current in standby - over 50% lower than competitive limits. These motor drive ICs offer a low-cost alternative to similar products and enhance system reliability through a variety of features, such as thermal shutdown, lock detection and auto-restart, while reducing system power consumption.

The two ICs present a choice of motor lock detection options, with the FAN8408D featuring Hall output (HO) for motor speed detection and the FAN8404D offering an alarm output to signal fan lockup.

The FAN8404D and the FAN8408D provide a wide range of operating voltages (from 4 to 15V).

Motor lock detection and auto restart functions are integrated on the devices.

The timing of lock detection and auto restart is controlled by an external capacitor connected to the lock detection (LD) pin.

Built-in thermal shutdown (TSD) circuits and a reverse-current protection diode are also featured.

Both the FAN8404D and the FAN8408D are offered in 8-SOPs.

On special request, an 8-MSOP is also available.

Pricing starts at US $0.25 (1000-off).
