The FAN7527 from Fairchild Semiconductor is a power factor correction (PFC) controller IC for use with power mosfets in electronic ballast and other low-power (sub-150W) switch-mode power supply applications. The combination of features found in the FAN7527 facilitates implementation of PFC and eliminates external components, thus reducing the overall system footprint and improving system reliability. The FAN7527, available in SOP and 8-pin DIP packages, is a boundary-conduction current-mode controller with low startup and operating current to minimise power loss and increase efficiency.
The FAN7527's integrated R/C filter eliminates the need for external components.
Adjustable overvoltage protection circuitry improves turn-on overshoot and current-limiting characteristics.
Other reliability enhancing features include no-load runaway protection and output drive clamping to limit overshoot of the power mosfet gate.
Improving the power factor in electronic and electrical circuits can increase current-carrying capacity, improve voltage to equipment, reduce power losses, and lower electric bills.
Furthermore, a key requirement to sell products in the European Community is limiting harmonic emissions that couple into the AC line supply.
With the tightening of standards that took effect on 1st January 2001 in the EN61000-3-2, power factor correction is now required for common office equipment.
