Express Logic has integrated its ThreadX RTOS into the Wind River Workbench 2.3 integrated development environment. Wind River Workbench, an Eclipse-based development suite supporting the entire device software development cycle, will enable Express Logic to play a larger role in the increasingly complex device software prevalent in digital consumer, defense/aerospace, medical devices and networking.

With the increased complexity of device software, many software applications involve well over one million lines of source code and the number of lines is doubling every two years.
To combat this complexity, device manufacturers require development solutions that provide standardisation across multiple projects, operating systems, and hardware platforms to reduce development time, maintenance costs, and system fragmentation in large network-centric applications.
Express Logic's ThreadX RTOS has proven to be popular among developers addressing deeply embedded, resource-constrained, high-volume applications.
But, the spectrum of device software requirements is broad, and more than one operating system is needed to serve all needs.
Wind River Workbench 2.3 provides a universal platform for complex device software integration in which operating systems such as VxWorks, Linux and ThreadX can be used to address this spectrum of application needs across a range of enterprise systems.

'We're very pleased to see Express Logic's ThreadX RTOS join VxWorks and Linux as one of the three target operating environments supported out-of-the-box by Wind River Workbench', said Rob McCammon, Director of Product Management for Wind River Development Suite, Wind River.
'Clearly, many developers choose ThreadX as their device RTOS, and Wind River is committed to providing developers with choice so they can standardise device development across the enterprise'.
'Adding support for ThreadX enables Wind River Workbench to more completely address the spectrum of developers' device software optimisation needs'.
ThreadX is a small-footprint, fast, royalty-free, source code RTOS that meets the needs of deeply embedded, resource-constrained devices in digital consumer, wireless networking, industrial automation, and medical instrumentation.
Already employed in more than 200 million devices, ThreadX is one of the most widely deployed RTOSs in the world.
Through the integration with Wind River Workbench, projects using ThreadX can be built easily, with source code of the application and the RTOS viewable through the Wind River Workbench Source Browser.
ThreadX application threads and kernel objects can be viewed and debugged using the Wind River Workbench Debugger.
At this time, ThreadX and Wind River Workbench support the full range of PowerPC and MIPS architectures.
Additional architectures will be added in the near future.
Wind River Workbench integration for ThreadX helps developers bring devices to market faster, more easily, and at a lower cost.
'We worked hand-in-hand with Wind River engineers to integrate our ThreadX RTOS into Wind River Workbench', commented William E Lamie, President of Express Logic.
'The inherent extensibility designed into Workbench from the beginning helped make this project easy since it already supported two other operating systems'.
'Our Phase I work is now complete, and the results will be available in Wind River Workbench 2.3'.
'We are already planning further work together in Phase II of our partnership integration effort'.
During Phase I, Express Logic and Wind River integrated ThreadX into Wind River Workbench 2.3 for OCD-connected target debugging, with full kernel awareness, for the PowerPC and MIPS architectures.
Future plans for Phase II of the joint development effort between Wind River and Express Logic include the addition of support for other architectures, additional debugger capabilities, and integration of ThreadX with other aspects of Wind River Workbench.
In addition to ThreadX, Express Logic's NetX TCP/IP stack, its FileX file system, PegX graphical design package, and USBX USB host/device propotocol support also are available for use with Wind River Workbench.
Prices start at $12,500 for a royalty-free single product licence.
