EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering has launched the FG-7000 Fiber Guardian and OG-5240 Optical Guardian for physical-layer and optical-layer monitoring in long-haul, metro and access networks. Fiber Guardian and Optical Guardian operate autonomously as stand-alone units. These monitoring solutions are very easy to install, configure and commission.
They can report their alarms to any predetermined location and, as a result, play an instrumental role in helping carriers achieve optimal network reliability and the highest quality of service.
Both Fiber Guardian and Optical Guardian can be accessed locally or remotely from any location.
In addition to Fiber Guardian and Optical Guardian, EXFO already provides protocol-layer monitoring capabilities with Network Guardian.
"The release of Fiber Guardian and Optical Guardian means EXFO offers the most comprehensive suite of monitoring products in the fibre-optic industry", said Mario Larose, Vice-President of Marketing at EXFO.
"Network service providers can use Fiber Guardian, Optical Guardian and Network Guardian as stand-alone maintenance solutions or they can upgrade to a full-fledged remote fibre test system (RFTS) with a central server providing state-of-the-art mapping capabilities, powerful monitoring and maintenance management tools as well as enhanced alarm management.
Fiber Guardian carries out 24/7 real-time monitoring on up to 32 fibres (physical layer) within an optical network.
This monitoring solution displays a message on its embedded screen and sends out an alarm if a measurement falls outside a user-defined threshold.
Through state-of-the-art instrumentation, Fiber Guardian can specify the location of a fault to reduce downtime to a minimum, or it can identify minor degradations to prevent loss of service.
Optical Guardian continuously monitors critical parameters of the optical channels (optical layer) within dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) or coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) networks.
Likewise, an alarm is automatically generated when a measurement falls outside user-defined thresholds.
Network Guardian is an optical network performance management system that supports a wide range of protocols like SONET, T-Carrier, SDH, PDH, 10/100 Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet.
It remotely carries out tests on points of presence, handoff points, co-location sites and customer premise equipment sites.
Beyond monitoring, Fiber Guardian, Optical Guardian and Network Guardian can also be used as maintenance tools by providing functions for statistics, long-term trend behavior and total remote control for specific tests.
"EXFO has all the bases covered for maintenance and quality of service monitoring requirements", Larose concluded.
