Exar Corporation has brough out two dual-channel devices: an I2C/SPI UART integrated with RS232 transceivers (XR20V2172), and a low-voltage 1.8V I2C/SPI UART with a 64byte FIFO (XR20M1172).

Exar Corporation has brough out two dual-channel devices: an I2C/SPI UART integrated with RS232 transceivers (XR20V2172); and a low-voltage 1.8V I2C/SPI UART with a 64byte FIFO (XR20M1172).

The dual-channel XR20xx172 series is aimed at the growing market for battery-powered and consumer products such as laptops, portable devices, desktop PCs, and industrial peripheral interfaces such as handheld terminals and Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, among others.

"Extending our serial communications reach into new markets, the XR20V2172 combines the functionality of an adjacent device function, the RS232 transceiver, on to the UART, delivering to customers an integrated solution that can minimise design challenges and accelerate market entry for their products", says Levent Ozcolak, vice president of marketing, Interface Products Division.

"Also, in battery-operated and consumer applications our low-voltage (1.8V) XR20M1172, which is available in small form factor packages, is ideal for space-constrained design environments".

The XR20M1172 UART has 64byte (TX and RX) FIFOs, a selectable I2C/SPI slave interface and operates from 1.62V to 3.63V.

The enhanced features in the XR20M1172 include a programmable fractional baud-rate generator, and 8x and 4x sampling rates that allows for a maximum baud rate of 16Mbit/s at 3.3V.

The standard features include 16 selectable TX and RX FIFO trigger levels, automatic hardware (RTS/CTS) and software (Xon/Xoff) flow control, and a complete modem interface.

Onboard registers provide the user with operational status and data error flags.

The XR20V2172 high performance UART has 64byte TX and RX FIFOs, a selectable I2C/SPI slave interface with integrated RS232 transceivers.

The XR20V2172 operates from 3.3 to 3.63V and offers additional features such as a programmable fractional baud rate generator, and, 8x and 4x sampling rates that allows for a maximum baud rate of 1Mbit/s at 3.3V.

The standard features include 16 selectable TX and RX FIFO trigger levels, automatic hardware (RTS/CTS) and patented software (Xon/Xoff) flow control, and a complete modem interface.

Onboard registers provide the user with operational status and data error flags.

An internal loopback feature offers the ability to perform system diagnostics.

The XR20V2172 is offered in a 64-pin QFN package, and is priced in the $4-$5 range in 1,000 piece quantities.

Exar products are European RoHS compliant except for external lead finish.

Lead-free products are also available upon request.
