Browser adds Internet
capabilities to Korean boxes
Korean-based S-Net Systems has selected Espial to deliver advanced capabilities for its Internet protocol TV (IPTV) set-top box
Capabilities in this STB will range from simple customised EPGs to the more complex video on demand and full Internet browsing - including faithful rendering of the latest Macromedia Flash content. Espial is a leading provider of set-top box and mobile handset software. Easy localisation was one of S-Net's mandatory requirements and instrumental in their selection of Espial technologies.

Users of the S-Net STB can expect intuitive interfaces that make access to video on demand, web browsing, e-mail and chat services quick and simple for every level of user.
Customisation of the UI is easy using traditional markup languages like HTML, allowing telcos or carriers to create the look and feel that matches the brand.
By building these capabilities within a browser framework, applications, components and new technologies can be added as the need arises, future-proofing the design.
'S-Net's commitment to a variety of geographies has given us a chance to showcase the ease with which Escape is localised to a market', says Dr Neale Foster, Director of Marketing for Television at Espial.
'We are always pleased to be selected by a customer that has very demanding technical requirements in a combination of two areas: TV and broadband Internet'.
Espial software enables IPTV set-top box manufacturers to deliver broadcast TV content with the capability of rolling out new applications that are responsive to market needs.
Easily integrated with any middleware or VOD supplier, Espial software can scale to meet the requirements of low-end to high-end set-top boxes.
The Espial Escape browser is specialised for the TV STB market, complying with international television standards including MHP, OCAP and ARIB and supporting internationalisation to meet the requirements of customers in North America, Middle East, Far East and Europe.
Low development risk and faster time to market can be achieved easily as Escape leverages a single code base to support all popular embedded platforms including MIPS, PPC, ST Micro and X86 processors using Linux or other embedded operating systems.
