The availability of Jbed integrated on the UIQ platform will enable UIQ Technology to offer its customers a powerful platform for multiple devices.

Esmertec has joined UIQ's alliance partner programme, and will offer its leading Jbed Advanced Java multitasking virtual machine (MVM) to UIQ customers globally.

The availability of Jbed integrated on the UIQ platform will enable UIQ Technology to offer its customers a powerful platform, on which various applications and services such as Internet browsing, 3D gaming, payment services or Bluetooth can be created and deployed across multiple devices.

Esmertec's flexible and scaleable Jbed Advanced software platform powers various mass-market handsets worldwide and enables developers to create cool, new applications and services for the next-generation of mobile phones, which meets the end users' demands for customised handsets and enhanced user experiences.

Combined with Jbed Advanced's highly recognised multitasking feature, it is possible to run several Java applications on a smart phone simultaneously and switch between them like on a PC; a mobile end user can for example listen to music while uploading pictures or emails parallel in the background providing the ultimate end user experience on today's handsets.

UIQ is a user interface and software development platform based on Symbian OS, especially designed for advanced, media rich mobile handsets.

Currently 5 handsets from Sony Ericsson and Motorola are based on the latest version of UIQ.

By integrating Jbed multitasking JVM on the UIQ platform, OEMs get a flexible and backwards compatible platform on which new innovative Java applications can be added continuously and run without compromising on consistency, quality and performance across a range of Java-enabled handsets, bringing benefit to both operators and Java developers.

In addition, the scalable Jbed platform offers UIQ an easy way to integrate additional JSRs, components and features to the UIQ platform, meeting the next-generation MSA (Mobile Service Architecture) umbrella standard (JSR-248).

"Esmertec is recognised for its high quality and performance Jbed Java Virtual machine with over 120 million shipments on mobile handsets worldwide", says Carina Lindberg, Head of Partner Management at UIQ Technology.

"We are therefore pleased to welcome Esmertec in our UIQ alliance programme and are confident that we can provide our customers highly customisable all-in-one platforms in the future".

"We are delighted that UIQ has recognised our expertise in the mobile telecommunications industry and chosen us as UIQ Alliance member", says Jean-Claude Martinez, CEO of Esmertec.

"We look forward to working together with UIQ in the future enabling our common customers to benefit from an all-in-one platform solution".
