Industry veterans have founded the first pan-European DVB-T conformance and testing organisation called Digital TV Labs based in Bristol, UK. DVB-T is the fastest growing European digital TV platform, but with a myriad of options in the DVB standard and limited European co-ordination, the multiplicity of different national network implementations is creating a huge challenge to digital receiver OEMs. Although Europe enjoys the benefits of the common DVB specification, each national network is specifying different options and there is significant diversity in technical implementations.

For example EPG information, channel ordering, interactive services and over-the-air upgrade features vary considerably.

To contend with these regional differences, consumer equipment OEMs have to adapt their products to meet the disparate country requirements, perform different conformance tests and then conduct extensive field trials.

With over 20 countries live or in trials, the specialist local knowledge and substantial testing requirements is hindering many OEMs from introducing quality products quickly across Europe.

Digital TV Labs was founded by former executives from DVB-T middleware leader Cabot Communications, where they recognised the growing problem for OEMs and the lack of an independent, full service test partner covering all of Europe.

The company provides a one-stop-shop for any company introducing DVB-T receivers into Europe.

With its extensive knowledge of pan-European DVB-T, a huge library of European transmission streams and custom in-house test suites, Digital TV Labs can ensure specification compliance as well as conformance with the real market conditions.

Keith Potter, CEO commented: 'We are working with OEMs through the whole development and deployment cycle, reducing the time to introduce products into each country whilst lowering their testing costs'.

To ensure low consumer return rates, receivers often need to be field tested in several locations including border areas within a national network.

With a potential 34 countries to cover, the logistic organisation and cost is prohibitive for many OEMs.

Digital TV Labs delivers low cost and timely expert field testing through its regular pan-European testing tours in a mobile test vehicle.

Digital TV Labs provides RF, MHEG-5, PSI/SI, EPG, CI, AFD, UI, teletext, subtitle, conformance, performance, stress and interoperability testing.

Tests are supersets of D-Book, E-book, NorDig and other standards and accommodate European variations.

Digital TV Labs has a carefully categorised, up to date, recorded transmission stream library, several from each DVB-T country deployment and region.

Product specification consultancy services are provided along with pan-European field testing services.
