Tianjin-based OEM HEG has made significant improvements to its adhesive application process yields following the adoption of the PumpPrint process and DEK Infinity printers

Following the adoption of the PumpPrint process from DEK Printing Machines, and the installation of DEK Infinity printers, Tianjin-based OEM HEG has made significant improvements to its adhesive application process yields. Explains Wang Chong Ji, Chief Engineer at HEG OEM (Tianjin) Electronics (HEG): 'We need to apply SMT adhesive onto a number of our circuit boards for applications such as automotive electronics and consumer electronics products, including DVD and air conditioning systems'.

Previously, the company used SMT dispensing machines for this task, but found that the slower adhesive application speed affected overall board throughput.

As a result, DEK's Infinity platform was selected to manage the adhesive application process, in tandem with DEK's PumpPrint process, giving faster throughput and higher process yields.

Since the purchase and installation of the DEK Infinity printers, overall production defect rates have dropped significantly to 20-30ppm, as confirmed by the company's extensive programme of quality assurance measures, which include 2D inspection, visual inspection, automatic optical inspection (AOI), and electrical test.

Further, since the implementation of the Infinity/PumpPrint combination at HEG, throughput for boards that require adhesive application has increased to more than 135 PCBs per hour, and in excess of 81,000 adhesive dots per hour, still comfortably inside PumpPrint's throughput capability.

Continues Wang: 'The main advantage of the DEK Infinity printer is that is simple.

It is simple in structure (modular) and simpler to operate than competitive systems'.

'This has resulted in a shorter time for maintenance'.

'Also, DEK Infinity printers have a higher repeated accuracy level than some competitive systems'.

'Further, because the PumpPrint technology is mature, the DEK Infinity platform is a highly capable and stable system, which is essential when you are operating at maximum capacity on an ongoing basis'.

'We are definitely considering purchasing more DEK Infinity systems as we have full confidence in DEK products'.

According to HEG, a major advantage of the PumpPrint process is that it is able to operate even in harsh environmental conditions, as the process can adapt to quite a wide range of temperature and humidity conditions and also glue viscosity levels.

In addition, this robustness means that aperture of the stencil need not be extremely smooth.

Concludes Peland Koh, General Manager, DEK Asia Pacific: 'This exciting preplacement mass imaging technology is relevant to any manufacturer that requires adhesive dispensing on their assembly lines'.

'As a result, we offer PumpPrint technology as a cost-effective and attractive solution for both current and future adhesive application needs'.

'For example, using mass imaging technology, customers can apply adhesive on PCB with through-hole components inserted or solder paste printed, while most methods available in the market today can only handle bare printed circuit boards'.

'This technically advanced solution obviously represents a significant long-term cost-saving dispensing method for our customers'.

Located in the Tianjin Free Trade Zone, HEG currently operates 21 automatic insertion machines, seven fully automatic SMT lines and nine manual assembly lines.

With this level of advanced technology, the company is able to achieve 8.16 million SMD placements/day and 8.68 million insertions/day.

HEG is certified to the ISO9001:2000 quality management system, and operates inline and functional test equipment to help ensure the quality of its end product.
