Distribution deal brings Kyocera industrial LCDs
Kyocera Fineceramics has appointed Densitron Technologies Displays Division to distribute the Kyocera range of LCDs in the UK and Ireland
The newly signed agreement will see the companies jointly develop organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) for use in portable electronics including PDAs, mobile phones and notebook devices. "OLEDs are one of the hottest developments in portable electronics at the present time", says Nick How, technical director, Densitron Europe.
"The combination of Opsys' chemical expertise and Densitron's ability to design and develop display panels to suit customer needs is a formidable combination".
OLEDs have many advantages over the backlit active-matrix LCD displays that are currently used in many mobile devices - they do not require a separate backlight, so can be thinner and more lightweight.
They have a quicker 'switching speed', enabling faster, smoother animation and are readable over a much greater viewing angle.
In addition, OLEDs are more efficient as only the lit section of the display draws power - a vital consideration when used in mobile devices.
Michael Holmes, Opsys' CEO, comments: "We are pleased to be working closely with Densitron in advancing the commercial application of our leading-edge OLED developments.
The benefits that our OLED technology brings to the display industry are tremendously exciting, paving the way for the future development of a new generation of lighter, more powerful mobile electronic devices".
