Datel's new LSN-16A series SIP DC/DC convertors enable true point-of-use (point-of-load) power processing

These nonisolated power convertors take commonly available onboard voltages (3.3, 5 or 12V) and convert them with the highest efficiency in the smallest area at the lowest cost to virtually any lower voltage required by the ever-evolving core and I/O logic of today's current hungry DSPs, ASICs, CPLDs etc.

Specifically, LSN-16As accept 3.3-5V inputs (3-5.5 range for W3 models) or 12V inputs (10-14V range for D12 models) and deliver 0.75, 1, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2, 2.5, 3.3 or 5V outputs fully rated at 16A.

The LSN-16A's fixed frequency (220/300kHz), synchronous buck topologies deliver conversion efficiencies as high as 96% with output noise as low as 30mV peak-peak.

Their standard packages - 50.8 x 12.7 x 9.14mm - are offered in either vertical or horizontal orientations.

Prices start from less than US $1 per amp.

The latest advance in distributed power, the most cost-effective multivoltage, high current power delivery to date, consists of isolated 12V onboard buses delivery power to numerous, nonisolated point-of-load (POL) convertors (which develop all the terminal voltages and currents).

Because there are typically many POLs in these new intermediate bus architectures (IBAs), standardising POL packaging and functionality has become an industry priority.

Over the past few years, the 10-pin SIP has clearly established itself as one of two de facto POL packaging standards, and Datel's new 16A LSN series deliver the most current and best price/performance ratio of any standard SIP to date.

LSN-16A series SIPs offer both fixed and user-programmable output voltages.

The fixed outputs (1.8, 2.5V etc) are factory trimmed by Datel.

They guarantee 1.25% unadjusted output accuracy, and their compensation schemes have been optimised for their individual output voltages.

Consequently, each model has the highest efficiency, lowest noise and quickest step response.

Additionally, for each input range (D12 and W3), LSN-16As offer an ultra-wide-trim T model where the output is user-selectable (0.75-5V) with single external resistor.

LSN-16As are true plug-and-play power convertors enabling system configuration literally in minutes.

In most applications, LSNs require no external I/O filtering to achieve either specified noise levels of FCC-compliant radiated/conducted emissions.

LSNs are designed with onboard input/output capacitors fully rated to handle the necessary input ripple current and fully capable of reducing output noise to specified levels.

The high efficiencies obviate the need for heatsinks and/or supplemental airflow, and all units operate without derating to at least +53C in still air.

LSN-16A series DC/DC convertors are part of the Datel lead-free initiative.

This programme eliminates all lead from PCBs, and from assembly and printing processes.

LSN-16A PCBs have an electroless nickel/immersion gold (ENIG) finish, and the package's 30mil round pins are tin-plated copper.

The LSN feature set includes output overcurrent detection, continuous short-circuit protection, +10% output-voltage trim, remote on/off control, output sense pins, optional vertical or horizontal package orientation, and optional "reverse" pinning (for Tyco compatibility).

Units are stable under no-load conditions (for load circuits going into "sleep" mode), and have the ability to start up monotonically and operate without incident into prebiased loads.

All models are UL/EN60950 certified and EMI/EMC compliant.

Small quantities of LSN-16A SIP POL DC/DC convertors (or free sample/evaluation units and evaluation boards) can be ordered directly from the Datel website using a credit card.
