Agfa to pioneer use
of Grating Light Valve
Agfa is to use patented Grating Light Valve (GLV) technology from Silicon Light Machines (SLM) in its next generation of computer-to-plate (CTP) products
Agfa is to use patented Grating Light Valve (GLV) technology fromSilicon Light Machines (SLM) in its next generation ofcomputer-to-plate (CTP) products. The Agfa Xcalibur 45 - athermal platesetter that enables commercial printers to producehigh quality prints at faster throughput speeds and at lowercosts - will be the first CTP solution designed around the GLVtechnology.

The GLV device is an optical micro-electromechanicalsystem (MEMS) with a variety of applications in thetelecommunications and imaging industries.
When used as a spatiallight modulator in CTP products, the device diffracts high powerlaser beams to provide a high-speed, ultra-precise method oftransferring digital images directly onto a printing plate.
Withextremely fast switching speeds and accurate diffraction control, the GLV device creates a complete 'swath' of writingbeams on the plate surface - enabling CTP manufacturers todeliver products that offer faster platemaking performance andsuperior image quality.

'Our customers demand platesettingsolutions that deliver continually better images withoutcompromising throughput and reliability', said Dave Costa, vice president of marketing, CTP Equipment of Agfa.
'To meetthese requirements, Agfa relies on innovative components like theGLV device, which takes a unique approach to overcome technicalhurdles and enables us to offer ground-breaking quality andperformance'.
The Agfa design win further demonstrates theversatility of SLM's innovative GLV technology.
SLM recentlyintroduced its flagship wavelength management product for theoptical communications market - a high-performance dynamic gainequaliser that balances spectral power levels in long-hauloptical networks with unprecedented precision.
In addition, SLMhas licensed the GLV technology to Sony for use in state-of theart display systems.
'We are pleased that Agfa has selectedour Grating Light Valve technology for its next-generationimaging system', said Tom Werner, CEO of Silicon LightMachines.
'Given the breadth of the GLV technology'sapplicability - from high-performance imaging markets to thefibre-optic communications industry - we look forward to workingwith other innovative companies that aim to revolutionise theirindustries as Agfa is doing with the announcement of theirXcalibur 45 product'.
Additionally, SLM's GLVtechnology allows for very tight integration of silicon-basedlogic and drive circuitry with light switching and routingfunctions.
These capabilities enable SLM to createcost-effective, high-performance and reliable optical products byleveraging the standard semiconductor manufacturing techniquesand facilities of its parent company, Cypress Semiconductor.
