Cygnal Integrated Products has introduced a full-specification microcontroller which it reckons gives design engineers an unprecedented feature set for its size

The C8051F300 enables localised data acquisition, processing, communication and control in a tiny 3 x 3mm footprint. "The C8051F300 packs a high speed CPU along with Flash memory and an A/D convertor into a remarkably small micro lead-frame package", said Danny Allred, Product Marketing Manager for Cygnal.

"Microcontrollers with similar feature sets are typically available in packages such as an 18-SOIC, which has a footprint over 13 times larger than the MLP".

The C8051F300 empowers system designers to embed distributed mixed-signal processing and control into a broad range of applications.

Computing capability is supplied by a pipelined 8051 CPU, delivering up to 25MIPS at 25MHz.

An 8bit 500Ksample/s A/D convertor with integrated temperature sensor is included for data acquisition.

A low power programmable analogue comparator is suitable for monitoring system voltages or as a 'wake-up' source.

Programmable counters and timers can be configured for a wide range of uses, including pulsewidth modulators and a real-time clock.

A 2% accurate on-chip oscillator allows the built-in UART to function without an external crystal or ceramic resonator, further reducing size and parts count.

Modifying or updating software is simple with 8Kbyte of in-system programmable Flash, key for rapid development and field re-programmability while also providing local data storage.

Integrated on-chip debug circuitry eliminates the need for large profile sockets and expensive in-circuit emulators, further reducing system costs and development time.

Advanced power management features on the C8051F300 make it ideal for low power applications.

The C8051F300 sells for $5.01 in 1000 piece quantities.

The C8051F300DK development kit, selling for $99, is a complete development suite with capabilities typical of in-circuit emulators costing many times more.

Both development kits and chips will be available in October.
