Embedded processor module
simplifies custom design
Crellon Microsystems has introduced the Ampro EnCore PP1 embedded processor module to simplify custom embedded design, and allow easy upgrading of embedded CPUs without having to redesign the system
Applications include products requiring fast time to market and low development cost, such as next generation routers, switches and network storage systems. The EnCore PP1, featuring the low power 300MHz Motorola MPC8245 PowerPC instruction set architecture (ISA), is a complete standards-based CPU subsystem on a small-form-factor board.

Built-in 66MHz PCIbus interface and other standard I/Os enable processor-independent interfacing to a custom embedded baseboard, saving processor development overhead usually associated with embedded systems design.
These processor independent interfaces also allow embedded designers to vary CPU performance and platform by simply plugging an alternate EnCore module into their existing carrier board.
Boot-ready operating system board support packages are also available, supporting Linux and the Wind River VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS).

Onboard features of the EnCore PP1 include: 10/100BaseT Ethernet controller, JTAG interface, two serial ports, four USB ports, enhanced Ultra 33/66 EIDE interface to two drives, floppy disk controller, PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, Fast IrDA port, ECP/EPP bidirectional parallel port and an AC97 audio interface.
Onboard memory includes 2Mbyte Flash memory with Ampro universal bootloader/monitor software, and support for up to 512Mbyte SODIMM SDRAM.
Typical operational power consumption is less than 2W.
Further EnCore product family members include an Alchemy AU1000 (MIPS32 core) CPU or a choice of three x86 architectures ranging from 486 to Pentium III.
Designers can thus enjoy the benefits of an off-the-shelf CPU solution while maintaining the flexibility of a full custom design, by creating a single application board to interface with any EnCore module to achieve the optimum performance, power consumption and cost.
