Cabot Communications walked off with first prize in the "Best interactive TV technology or application" category for the UK's fastest MHEG-5 engine, Mercator, at the prestigious Cable and Satellite International/Mediacast Product of the Year Awards 2004. To add to the successes of the evening, Cabot's pan-European Digital TV Suite achieved second place in the category "Best terrestrial DTV technology".

Cabot Communications has successfully completed MHEG-5 1.06 testing for its Mercator MHEG5 plug-in and Aurora DVB middleware solution
Over 170 entries in 16 categories were judged by some of the brightest and most respected minds in the industry, providing a balance of technical, marketing and analytical backgrounds from different industry sectors and geographic regions.
Mercator is a complete, packaged development kit including object libraries and full documentation, allowing set-top box and integrated TV (iDTV) manufacturers to quickly add MHEG-5 support for the burgeoning UK market.
Mercator is available for most CPU architectures and includes the CHIL (Cabot High Level Interface) API for platform independence.
An independent consultancy has benchmarked Mercator as on average 40% faster on rendering MHEG-5 content than its nearest competitor Unlike alternative MHEG-5 engines, Mercator was developed as an embedded implementation and therefore has low memory requirements and high performance.
In addition, Mercator makes upgrades of the evolving MHEG-5 standard a straightforward process, significantly reducing the cost of maintaining product lines for manufacturers.
The latest version of Mercator conforms to the latest v1.06 MHEG-5 interactive standard for the UK digital TV market.
Mercator is one of a range of pre-integrated modular products in the Cabot Digital TV Suite, which achieved second place in the in the "Best terrestrial DTV technology" at the Cable and Satellite International/Mediacast awards.
The suite comprises Mercator, Eclipse DVB-T and DVB-S middleware and Callisto over-air download module, providing an out-of-the-box digital terrestrial receiver solution to cover all of Europe.
The additional specialised MHEG-5 and DVB-T testing and consultancy services available from Cabot ensure a market-ready, robust and stable solution.
