Digital TV software
suite covers all Europe
Cabot Communications has released the first pan-European off-the-shelf DVB middleware solution
Cabot's digital TV software suite can now fully support digital terrestrial transmission variations across mainland Europe, saving consumer equipment (CE) manufacturers 20 man-years in developing time and bringing down the price of set top boxes and IDTVs. Cabot's customers include Pioneer, Philips and Toshiba and the company has already contracted with 16 major companies in the DVB-T arena.

Managing Director, Keith Potter comments: "To develop a pan-European DVB stack requires around 10 man years with an additional 10 man years to develop an MHEG-5 solution for the UK.
Cabot is unique in providing the first pan-European off-the-shelf solution with all the necessary support services to enable manufactures to capitalise on the fast growing free-to-air terrestrial market by driving down the cost of receivers still further".
According to Datamonitor, the price of set-top boxes will be critical to increasing shipments to European markets from 1 million in 2003 to over 8 million in 2007.
Cabot's digital TV software suite will help reduce the price below the critical Eur 150 (GBP 100) mark, giving a significant boost to manufacturers looking to capture a share of the European market.
In addition, Cabot's software suite will reduce the cost of IDTVs, to create a significant market opportunity targeting households replacing existing TVs to access free-to-air digital services.

Datamonitor predicts significant growth in this market once prices fall.
With DTT services already enjoying rapid growth in the UK, Germany, Finland and Spain, most European countries are accelerating plans to switch off analogue services.
However, in spite of the common DVB-T digital transmission standard across Europe, set-top box and IDTV manufacturers need to contend with significant regional differences, to achieve economies of scale.
Cabot is now the only middleware supplier to offer a single software platform to conform with regional variations in language support, Electronic Programme Guides (EPG), parental ratings, channel ordering and enhanced audio support.
Cabot's solution will also reduce maintenance costs and keep pace with the fast-evolving technical standards in each country.
Cabot's digital TV software suite will continue to be enhanced as new countries rollout DTT.
It includes the Eclipse DVB middleware solution, Mercator, the UK MHEG-5 engine and the Callisto over-air-download (OAD) module which supports the UK proprietary standard, as well as the new SSU European standard.
Cabot's digital TV software suite is a scalable and modular digital TV software solution supporting IBM, Micronas, NEC, Philips, STM and Zarlink chipsets.
The software suite is packaged as individual fully documented modules with well-defined API or as a complete integrated solution.
