CTL Manufacturing has added a clean room as well as crop and preform capabilities for through-hole components, to enhance its assembly services portfolio and to allow component distribution companies within the Abacus Group to offer component supply, crop and preform services on a single-source basis.

This expansion of capabilities represents an investment by CTL of GBP 100,000 in its Stonehouse, Gloucestershire base over the next 12 months, and will create new manufacturing jobs within the local area.

The clean room now allows CTL to enhance the integration of display products and single board computer products, including LCD screen and backlight assembly, touch screens, keypads, joysticks, sensors, fine gear actuators and scientific assemblies.

Customers can therefore source electronic components, cable and harness assembly, electromechanical, and total solution assembly services from a single source.

In addition to this wide ranging manufacturing services capability, CTL can also offer assembly of a wide range of display and SBC solution products direct from Trident Microsystems, a sister business in the Abacus Group of companies.

The component lead cropping and preforming capability is applicable to a wide range of axial and radial components, and allows CTL to perform this service for components used in in-house assembly work, or as an outsource service for OEM businesses or other contract manufacturers.

As the use of leaded components continues to fall steadily in favour of surface mount components, many manufacturers will not be able to justify the investment in equipment necessary to crop and form small number of leaded devices, even though through-hole technology will continue to feature in many assemblies for some time to come.

By investing in this capability, which can be offered as a specialist service as well as being used to streamline assembly work on CTL's own lines, the company expects to grow its turnover and attract new customers.
