New from Clare is the LIA120 optically isolated linear error amplifier with integrated gain and temperature compensation. The LIA120 features a shunt regulator, a linear optocoupler and a secondary side sensor for temperature and gain compensation. The integration of these building blocks into an 8-pin surface mount package provides a space saving solution for processing the feedback signal in closed loop power control circuits, as necessary in switching power supplies, UPSs, inverters and motor control systems.
The IC provides linear signal transfer, with optical isolation between the output and the input circuits in these products.
Functionally, the LIA120 addresses the important functions for error signal processing in an isolated power control system.
First, a circuit composed of the optical link, a voltage reference and an error amplifier monitor the error signal on the output side of the power system.
Secondly, a linear signal is transferred optically to the input side and provides a scaled feedback to the PWM controller on the input side for the power semiconductors.
A critical enhancement to this technique is the inclusion of additional sensing for the linear response of the LIA120, with low thermal variations and increased frequency response.
The LIA120 offers great flexibility for design.
Voltage gain of the error signal, is set simply with two resistors.
The frequency response across the isolation barrier is 40kHz.
The IC is robust for adverse environments offering an isolation voltage of 3750V RMS.
Other applications include isolated amplifiers, central office supplies and telephone line isolation.
'The LIA120 for its cost and size is the best integrated solution on the market for isolated error signal processing in power electronics'.
'It fits in most of the applications of the Ixys power semiconductors, and was the result of close collaboration between our Micronix and Clare designers', said Nathan Zommer, CEO of Ixys Corp.
'We are deploying our combined technological strength in these divisions, in the markets that we presently serve, as part of our IC power strategy'.
