Aldershot-based Gemini Circuits provides high technology assemblies to the electronics industry and can support complex clients with BGA placement and rework. With the increase in this type of technology, Gemini decided to increase its BGA capability by adding an Ersa IR 650 rework system, purchased from Blundell Production Equipment. Gemini's core business is with PCB design, development, manufacturing and assembly, across a variety of market sectors including medical, avionics and defence.
and practically all of their clients are based in the South of England, which means they have a very localised relationship with their customers.
They are driven by technology and product rather than market sector and a lot of our work comes from customer recommendation.
Recently, Gemini's Aldershot plant experienced significant damage following a chemical fire in its PCB plant.
The fire spread through the chemical platting area and caused some damage to the neighbouring CEM facility.
Despite the damage, the company's front-end engineering, design and administration facilities were up and running within a couple of days and contingency production plans were put into place.
Out of disaster has come opportunity and Gemini are now planning to build a new manufacturing facility to further enhance their manufacturing capability and they will be looking to further develop their turnkey manufacturing capacity by getting involved more with low-to medium quantity box-build and final complete product assembly and test'.
Gemini's production bias tends towards batch sizes ranging from 1 to 200 and because of this, a lot of work is with prototypes and small batch runs, but they do have the capability to turn work around quickly.
The purchase of the Ersa IR 650 from Blundells was as an upgrade to the company's existing rework equipment, especially for BGA's.
'As well as using the equipment for our their products where changes and modifications to BGAs is relatively common, Gemini are also able to use the equipment to support other CEMs and manufacturing companies in who nee to repair and modify their boards.
Some customers also need components from Tin-Lead boards replaced with lead-free equivalents, and the IR 650 is perfect for this type of application'.
Gemini have also found a multitude of uses for the IR650, with anything from prototyping to repairs and upgrades.
It is used in conjunction with Gemini's extensive range of inspection equipment enabling them to identify faults fast and carry out the necessary remedial action.
In order to provide a reliable service, Gemini realised the importance of having the right tools for the job and the company was one of the first users of the now industry-standard Ersascope BGA inspection system, along with an on-site X-ray inspection system.
