BTU has received orders totalling $1.4 million for its solar cell diffusion and antireflective coating systems. BTU's quartz muffle diffusion furnaces offer a unique design to address high-volume solar cell production needs with precision temperature and atmosphere control. The unique fused quartz muffle design provides thermal uniformity and atmosphere control required for a high throughput, inline solution and offers a very low contamination process environment for the phosphorous diffusion process.

The recent orders show a renewed interest in BTU's antireflective coating technology.

BTU signed a contract with one of the world's leading solar companies to supply a total of six quartz muffle belt diffusion furnaces to sites around the world.

Based in Eastern Europe, the customer is expanding its activity in the field of photovoltaic cell manufacture with the purchase of a BTU CVD system for antireflective coating of multicrystalline bulk silicon wafers.

Paul van der Wansem, Chairman and CEO of BTU International comments: 'These orders continue to show strength in the photovoltaic market with requirements for continuous inline production solutions'.

BTU has long been involved with photovoltaics starting with its APCVD technology developed in the 1980s and 1990s.

Photovoltaics, or solar cells, are a clean energy alternative gaining tremendous momentum with today's fossil fuel costs and impacts to the environment.

Solar cell manufacturing requires several thermal steps not that dissimilar to semiconductor manufacturing.

These processes include diffusion, drying coating and firing of the solar cell.

BTU provides thermal solutions to all of these process steps.
