The SMS 110 is a 10-way serial control mains unit featuring a purpose-designed multipurpose microcontroller

New to the Bryant manufactured family of 1U rack-mounting mains distribution units and launched at the IBC in September is the SMS 110, a 10-way serial control mains unit featuring a purpose designed, multipurpose microcontroller. Its basic operation is identical to the existing SMR 110 mains unit in that to limit the likelihood of loaded monitor stacks, equipment racks, etc causing a line breaker or local fuse to blow, each IEC outlet and kit attached is powered up sequentially.

Outputs are individually fused with bicolour LED status indicators.

The LEDs switch from red to green as each relay kicks in.

A blown output fuse will switch the affected LED back to red.

All the IEC outlets are 10A shuttered units and an integral tie-bar is provided as standard for the output cables.

Units can also be "cascaded" so that more than one unit can be connected to fire or shutdown in sequence.

These new SMS units offer the benefit of serial control, typically for use with a master computer.

The serial control is a mixture of RS422 and RS485 as used by a lot of broadcast equipment.

This allows setup changes to such actions as the sequence-on time delays, or the order in which outlets are switched either on or off.

Even more usefully, serial control also allows "real-time" control of each outlet and the ability to check, or for the SMS to report, fuse status from a central control room automation system.

The Bryant Broadcast units avoid the use of semiconductor switches; the large amount of noise they introduce to the mains signal and the inability of the zero phase turn on semiconductor switch to help peak inrush currents - favouring instead relays, with their inherent usefulness in scenarios where the unit will normally be either on or off unless activated by the user.
