Server management boards
adopt new protocol
Avocent Corp is to integrate the new DMTF SMASH server management command line protocol into its embedded Virtual Presence Infrastructure product line
Avocent Corp is to integrate the Distributed Management Task Force's (DMTF) new standard Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (SMASH) server management (SM) command line protocol (CLP) into its embedded Virtual Presence Infrastructure (eVPI) product line. This enables administrators to use a consistent command line interface to server monitoring and management tasks in heterogeneous server environments.

Agilent to divest remote management business
Avocent Corp and Agilent Technologies have signed an agreement for Avocent to purchase assets and to license technology used by Agilent in its remote management business
With Avocent planning support in products such as its eVPI1000 remote management card, the IT process for managing disparate servers will become more streamlined and simplified, enabling administrators to realise a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) in server environments.
Avocent's eVPI1000 extends existing management domains by allowing access to various boot and system consoles over the LAN, including KVM over IP and virtual media.
Further details on other Avocent products to integrate SMASH SM CLP support will be made available soon.

Building blocks embed server management
Avocent Corp has developed a novel building block architecture aimed at harnessing the power of embedded technologies and specifications for remote server management
The DMTF released the new SMASH SM CLP standard on 7th June 2005 to address the lack of command line consistency to management and monitoring information in heterogeneous server environments.
The SM CLP addresses an end user demand for a universal command line syntax, allowing systems offered by different vendors to be managed in similar ways.
Adding SM CLP-based consistency to eVPI products will strengthen Avocent's existing embedded products that already include complete firmware and software building blocks for lights out manageability.
'Vendors integrating standards into their server management products can help provide cost control and simpler manageability advantages', commented John Humphreys, Analyst, IDC.
'With hardware costs versus management costs having finally tipped to where most spending is on maintaining systems, standards can aid in manageability costs by simplifying manageability processes, especially in multivendor environments'.
'IT customers need a common command line to manage server hardware from a variety of vendors'.
'Avocent is moving forward on its plan to adopt the DMTF's SMASH SM CLP within our firmware and software products to help unify data centre and large enterprise management, thereby reducing TCO', said Mark Lee, Senior Vice President, Embedded Business, Avocent Corp.
'Avocent has a long history of building industry standards around manageability'.
'Industry-standards compliance and enabling customer access to leading systems management solutions are key aspects of our drive for a scalable, standardised systems in the data centre'.
