With a +/-1 *C maximum temperature error, sensors from Microchip provide accurate digital temperature information for protection and/or calibration, using minimal board space

Microchip has announced new digital-temperature sensors in space-saving SOT-23 packages. With a +/-1 *C maximum temperature error, these devices provide accurate digital temperature information for protection and/or calibration, using minimal board space and no external components. Microchip's MCP980X devices convert and communicate the temperature data in about 30 milliseconds (for 9-bit resolution) via an industry standard I2C or SMBus interface.

The conversion time can be traded against a higher resolution of up to 12-bits, depending on system requirements.

The additional SMBus system timeout available on the MCP9802/3 devices can help system reliability by preventing the communication bus from locking up.

These digital temperature sensors only use 200 microamps of operating current and have a shutdown current of 1 microamp.

In addition, a one-shot temperature measurement mode can wake the device to take a single temperature measurement before going back into sleep mode.

The MCP9800/2 are available in a SOT-23 package and feature an internally set slave addresses.

The MCP9801/3 are available in MSOP-8 and SOIC-8 packages and offer user-programmable slave addresses.

The MCP9802/3 offer an additional SMBus timeout.

Samples and volume production are available now.
