One-box tester handles all W-CDMA test items
The Anritsu MT8820A is a hardware platform with options to allow evaluation of all the main transmission/reception test items for W-CDMA (3GPP) user equipment terminals.

The mobile communications environment has rapidly changed with the recent introduction of data services such as I-mode in Japan and the introduction of GPRS packet services in Europe. These technologies, coupled with the impending introduction of the world's first commercial W-CDMA service in Japan, is increasing the expectation of W-CDMA and driving the trend from research and development to high-volume production of 3G terminals. With this in mind, Anritsu has introduced the MT8820A, a hardware platform that can accommodate a wide range of dedicated measurement software and hardware options to allow evaluation of all the main transmission/reception test items for W-CDMA (3GPP) user equipment (UE) terminals.
The MT8820A covers the frequency range from 30MHz to 2.7GHz and is designed to perform transmitter and receiver tests on 3G W-CDMA UE terminals in accordance with 3GPP TS34.121 for both R and D and manufacturing applications.
Call processing is also supported, allowing both functional tests and transceiver measurements to be made in a call processing state.
Twelve transmitter measurement items including: modulation accuracy; peak code domain power; spectrum emission mask and adjacent channel power ratio are provided.
Receiver measurement items include block error rate (BLER) and bit error rate (BER), both of which are performed in accordance with the 3GPP loopback method.
In addition, the voice signal from the terminal can be echoed-back during conversation, to perform a simple voice communications test.
3GPP call processing includes; registration; origination; termination and disconnection from the network.
A terminal monitor function allows periodic reporting of the W-CDMA terminal power level and power class.
The call processing function can be disabled, allowing UE measurements to be made in "test mode".
Typical problems encountered in current W-CDMA production lines can be attributed to: high cost due to use of several pieces of expensive R and D equipment; long measurement time; complicated control software and lack of flexibility, which reduces manufacturing throughput.
A built-in GPIB interface allows the MT8820A to be easily integrated into automated manufacturing lines.
By means of its advanced DSP and parallel measurement technologies, the MT8820A dramatically reduces test times and helps increase productivity.
In addition, several measurement items can be selected freely for batch measurement.
A one-touch operation also allows each selected batch measurement item to be executed repeatedly for a designated number of times.
Pass/fail evaluation of the main measurement items can be performed easily and quickly.
Anritsu will continue to develop additional hardware and software to enable the MT8820A to offer a comprehensive 3G test capability including multisystem support, as the market requires it and in line with the 3GPP specifications.
