Synthesiser adds more
functions to basestations
The AD9858 is the first integrated synthesiser to combine a 1Gsample/s direct digital synthesiser, 10bit DAC and fast frequency hopping and fine-tuning resolution functionalities on a single chip
The low-cost AD9858 performs at more than triple the speed of previous solutions, without increasing power dissipation, making it well suited to wireless infrastructure as well as military and aerospace radar applications. In wireless basestation applications, the AD9858 provides a lower-cost integrated and flexible platform for realising fast hopping synthesisers that do not require isolation switches.

On-chip functional blocks include a DDS core, a digital to analogue convertor, 2GHz RF mixer, a 150MHz phase detector and a programmable charge pump with proprietary fast-locking acquisition logic.
The integration of these multiple functional blocks and their respective levels of performance enable the AD9858 to achieve breakthrough synthesiser performance at low levels of cost, power dissipation and implementation complexity.
"Unlike other high-speed DDS products that are available, the AD9858 integrates a DAC, phase/frequency detector and charge pump", said Kevin Kattman, product line director for high-speed convertors at Analog Devices.

Inertial measurement unit delivers performance and functionality previously reserved for defence, aerospace and other high-end applications, at approximately one tenth the cost
"The result is a highly cost-efficient solution that addresses designer requirements of low phase noise, low spurious energy, fast frequency switching and wide bandwidth linear sweeping capability".
The AD9858 DDS is a flexible device that consists of a power-efficient DDS core, a 32bit phase accumulator, 14bit phase offset adjustment, and a 1Gsample/s 10bit DAC.
It features an analogue mixer capable of operating at 2GHz, a phase-frequency detector (PDF), and a programmable charge pump (CP) with advanced fast-lock capability.
These RF building blocks can be used for various frequency synthesis loops or as needed in system design.
The new DDS can directly generate frequencies up to 400MHz+ when driven at 1GHz internal clock speed.
The reference clock can be derived from an external clock source of up to 2GHz by using the on-chip divide-by-two feature.
The on-chip mixer and PFD/CP make possible a variety of synthesiser configurations capable of generating frequencies in the 1-2GHz range or higher.
The AD9858 is easily configured by writing data to its on-chip digital registers that control all operations of the device.
In addition, it can be programmed to operate in single-tone mode or in a frequency-sweeping mode.
To reduce power consumption, there is also a programmable full-sleep mode.
The AD9858 is available in a 100-lead EPAD-TQFP at $49.50 per unit in 1000-piece quantities.
