The ADE7757 is a high-accuracy electrical energy metering IC with an on-chip oscillator and direct stepper motor drive capability

The new device from Analog Devices has similar functionality to the company's widely used ADE7755, but does not require an external crystal or resonator, thus reducing the overall cost of building a watt-hour meter. Like the ADE7755, the ADE7757 achieves superior accuracy, with less than 0.1% linearity error over a dynamic range of 500 to 1, and operates with a single 5V power supply.

The ADE7757 includes proprietary analogue and digital circuitry to measure electrical energy usage over wide variations of environmental conditions and long periods of time.

The chip directly interfaces with a shunt resistor and operates with ac input.

The small, full-scale analogue input range allows the chip to interface to low-value shunt resistances without sacrificing dynamic range.

Low-frequency pulse outputs supply average real power information and can directly interface to a stepper motor counter display.

In addition, synchronised high-frequency pulse outputs are available for calibration and test purposes.

The high-frequency pulse outputs can also be used with a microcontroller or an automatic meter reading (AMR) module.

Due to the similarities between the ADE7757 and ADE7755, the Application Note AN-559 can be used as a basis for an IEC1036 low-cost watt-hour meter reference design.

The EVAL-ADE7757EB evaluation board is also available to facilitate performance and functionality verifications.

The ADE7757 is priced at $2.10 per unit in 1000-piece quantities and is available now in a 16-lead narrow body SOIC package.
