Free software simulates PLL performance
Analog Devices has developed a comprehensive design and simulation tool for use with PLL (phase-locked-loop) frequency synthesisers
The new ADIsimPLL, available in CD-ROM or web-based versions, is a user-friendly, interactive tool that simulates all key nonlinear effects that can significantly influence PLL performance. Using ADIsimPLL, a designer can observe detailed performance data for a PLL design within minutes, reiterate and resimulate their design based on the new data and save valuable time during the design cycle, resulting in faster time to market for products.

Traditionally, the simulation and testing of key PLL circuit performance parameters, such as phase noise, spurious performance and locking time, could only be achieved by building and characterising a prototype circuit and then adjusting, or "tweaking" the component values to improve performance.
This manual process could often take designers several days to implement and measure.
The ADIsimPLL enables rapid and reliable evaluation of PLL performance by allowing designers to quickly change the PLL circuit design and then observe immediate performance changes.
"As one of the world's leading analog component manufacturers, our comprehensive knowledge of PLLs and the system design process is incorporated in the new ADIsimPLL tool", said Christian Kermarrec, vice president, RF and wireless systems, Analog Devices.
"By simplifying the design and simulation process, we are allowing designers to explore new features and capabilities in their products by making the migration to newer PLLs, RF, and analogue circuitry easier and faster".
The interactive environment of the ADIsimPLL tool makes it extremely user friendly.
Once the designer loads the ADIsimPLL software and appropriate user key onto their PC, the program is completely menu driven.
To start, the designer chooses a circuit by entering the desired output frequency range and selects a PLL, VCO (voltage control oscillator) and crystal reference.
Once the loop filter configuration has been selected, the user can analyse and optimise the phase noise and margin, gain levels, spurious levels and lock time in both frequency and time domain.
ADIsimPLL is available both as a download from the Analog Devices website and on CD-ROM from any Analog Devices sales office.
