Analog Devices has released its own novel flat-panel interface solution
An innovation in high-speed, mixed-signal design and manufacturing, the AD9887 cost-effectively integrates both the analogue interface and digital visual interface (DVI) for flat panel monitors and projectors. The dual interface assures compatibility with over one billion PCs in the world today, while still being "digital-ready" for the future.

The AD9887 uses ADI's industry-leading ADC and phased-locked loop (PLL) technology for the analogue interface, which is optimised for a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024 at 75Hz (SXGA).

The AD9887 is fully compatible with DVI Version 1.0 requirements and has also been extensively tested with the industry leading DVI transmitters at DDWG Plugfests.
The DVI receiver supports a maximum resolution 1280 x 1024 at 60Hz (SXGA).
Although a DVI receiver is frequently referred to as a "digital" interface, the AD9887 circuit design is actually a complex mixed-signal block with signal speeds in excess of 1.1GHz and uses ADI's proprietary technology to process DVI signals.
According to Willard Bucklen, product line director, High Speed Convertors, Analog Devices: "By combining these two high-speed, mixed-signal interfaces on a single chip, we were able to reduce our customers' costs while maintaining the excellent image quality that sells projectors and monitors.
Analog Devices is the only company to effectively deliver such a complex, high-performance, low-cost solution to the display market".
The AD9887 analogue interface has a 140MHz triple ADC with internal 1.25V reference, on-chip PLL to generate a pixel clock from HSYNC and COAST, and programmable gain, offset and clamp control.
The device also contains a midscale clamp for YUV signals and full sync processing for composite sync and sync-on-green (SOG) applications.
The digital receiver is fully compatible with the DVI Version 1.0 standard and processes DVI signals to provide up to SXGA (112Mpps) image resolution.
The AD9887-100 for XGA displays is in production and available for $9.50 in 1000-piece quantities.
The AD9887-140 for SXGA displays is in production and is available for $10.90 in 1000-piece quantities.
Both are packaged in 160-lead MQFP surface mount plastic packages.
