Anchor Bay Technologies has achieved tape-out success on two of its video processing scaler ASICs using AMI Semiconductor's FPGA-to-ASIC conversion technology

Anchor Bay Technologies (ABT), creator of the award-winning DVDO video processing technologies, has achieved tape-out success on two of its video processing scaler ASICs using AMI Semiconductor's FPGA-to-ASIC conversion technology. AMIS was able to provide ABT fast time to market due to its extensive joint ASIC development plan, crafted during its 20 years of experience in FPGA-to-ASIC conversions.

ABT focused on implementation and verification of the source code in its original FPGA design, and AMIS ported the design into a deep-submicron standard cell technology, integrating additional functionality for a reduced total system cost.

'The video processing area, which is extremely competitive, is driven by time to market and reduced part costs, making it a perfect arena for using FPGA-to-ASIC technology', said Vince Hopkin, Vice President of structured digital products at AMI Semiconductor.

'Our strong track record in converting mid-range ASICs and our specialised IP targeted at the video consumer market made it possible to exceed Anchor Bay's expectations, and made AMIS the best choice for their needs'.

'This was certainly an exciting project for us and we look forward to continued success with Anchor Bay in the future'.

ABT's high performance video scaling ASICs for standard definition and high definition video signal processing are completely flexible, accepting standard definition (480p, 576p) and high definition (720p and 1080i) inputs and outputting any resolution from VGA (640x480) to 1080p (1920x1080) with multiple standard and custom aspect ratios.

Since the scaling engine is completely flexible, other image manipulation features are also supported including zoom, pan and border controls.

The two parts are currently sampling and will begin shipping in the first quarter of 2006.

Currently, AMIS supports cell-based structured digital technologies as well as structured arrays with its XPressArray and XLArray product families.

These provide drop-in replacement FPGA intellectual property (IP), as well as seamless turnkey design services that reduce customer resource requirements in order to cost reduce FPGA designs for mass manufacturing as ASICs.
